Reptiles, Caravaggio and Medusa

24th Jan 2022

On Tuesday 18th January 2022, an intrepid band of reptile lovers and art scholars from the Herpetological Society of GCA (Reptile Club) and GCA’s GCSE Art department, namely Charise Miller, Corey Cumming, Saif Hosen, Sessil Velikova, Shan Shan Weng, Ela Aslan, Arthur Andrade Henriques and Rozerin Coban ventured into Belmont Infant school to run a Reptiles & Art workshop with Year 2 students.

Belmont pupils were treated to an ‘up-close and personal’ encounter with Comet the Panther Chameleon, Kai and Koura the Horsefield Tortoises, and star of the show, Tobias the Ball Python.

GCSE Art students showed the younger pupils their portfolios including their studies of Caravaggio’s The Head of Medusa to inspire the youngsters who are busy learning about the Greek Myths. Our art students, led by the enthusiastic Mr Chorley, then ran a printmaking session looking at textures in the natural world.

The workshop was a massive success, with GCA pupils acting as wonderful role models for Belmont pupils, encouraging a love of the natural world and an eye for detail, as well as a love of art.

They acquitted themselves so impressively. Our students were intelligent, sensitive, encouraging, generous - proper role models. They gave off a fantastic impression of the school. The staff at the primary school were really blown away by the quality of artwork in the portfolios and I feel were left with a sense that our kids are so talented and quite special and GCA is an exciting, nurturing environment.

The Headteacher offered to have them all back for work experience should they want to, which is a great offer to leave with. They also want our students to return and do presentations to other year groups.
