KS3 Students Visit the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum

20th Oct 2026

This week, a group of KS3 students enjoyed an exciting trip to the British Museum to see the spectacular Bayeux Tapestry exhibition.

The trip brought together students for a variety of reasons: some as a reward for their commitment to Paired Reading Club, others to encourage their enthusiasm for History, and some who have expressed an interest in studying French at GCSE. All students behaved impeccably and were a real credit to GCA.

The exhibition built a wonderful sense of anticipation as we passed through a darkened gallery of fascinating historical artefacts before descending a staircase to the main event. Stretching an incredible 70 metres, the tapestry was a truly impressive sight! Students followed the dramatic story of King Harold II's downfall and William the Conqueror's (Guillaume le Conquérant, formerly Guillaume le Bâtard!) victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

The visit also highlighted the fascinating links between History and French, with the Norman Conquest helping to explain why an estimated 30–40% of modern English vocabulary has French origins.

Mr Harris's expert knowledge brought the story vividly to life, while students were particularly impressed by the intricate embroidery and the wonderful collection of real and imaginary animals decorating the tapestry's borders.

A huge thank you to Ms Swinyard for managing to secure so many tickets to one of London's hottest exhibitions, and well done to all our students for representing GCA so brilliantly!
