16th Jul 2026This summer, our Year 9 Mandarin Excellence Programme students travelled to Shenyang, China, for an incredible nine day cultural and language immersion experience.
From the moment they arrived, students embraced every opportunity to develop their Mandarin skills while experiencing life in China first-hand. The visit began with an opening ceremony, Mandarin lessons and a Tai Chi session before students explored the bustling local night market, their first chance to put their language learning into practice in a real-world setting.
Each day combined classroom learning with exciting cultural experiences. Despite an unexpected monsoon and severe weather warning early in the trip, spirits remained high, and our students took everything in their stride. They continued to show resilience, enthusiasm and a willingness to embrace every new experience.
Throughout the week, students explored China's rich history and traditions through a variety of hands-on activities. They learnt traditional crafts, tried fan painting and the delicate art of sugar painting, and enjoyed making their own dumplings before celebrating with a traditional Chinese banquet. Visits to Beiling Park, the Imperial Palace, the Palaeontology Museum and Liaoning's museums gave students a fascinating insight into China's history, culture and scientific heritage.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the visit was seeing students use their Mandarin beyond the classroom. Whether ordering food, shopping in local markets or speaking with members of the local community, they grew in confidence every day, discovering that the language they have worked so hard to learn could be used in meaningful, authentic situations.
As the trip came to a close, students reflected on the friendships they had made, the memories they had created and the many new experiences they had shared. The closing ceremony provided a fitting celebration of everything they had achieved before one final dramatic monsoon reminded everyone that China had certainly kept the trip memorable until the very end!
Our students were outstanding ambassadors for GCA throughout the visit. They demonstrated maturity, curiosity and respect, representing the school with pride at every stage of the programme.
The Mandarin Excellence Programme continues to provide our students with life-changing opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. Experiences such as this not only strengthen language skills but also develop confidence, resilience and a deeper appreciation of different cultures. We are incredibly proud of everything our students achieved and look forward to seeing how this unforgettable experience inspires them in the future.
