Visit to the Sumo Presentation at the Royal Albert Hall

24th Oct 2025

A group of Year 9 students had the incredible opportunity to attend the Sumo Presentation at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall. The event offered a fascinating insight into Japan’s ancient sporting and cultural traditions, showcasing the skill, discipline, and deep ritual that define sumo wrestling. Students were captivated by the athleticism of the wrestlers, the rhythmic music that accompanied each bout, and the cultural significance of the rituals performed before each match.

Here’s what our students had to say about this unforgettable experience:

Justine
“Firstly, I really enjoyed the movements of the wrestlers as they fight each other on the ring, and, secondly, I enjoyed the music tradition before the fight starts where you hear a drums performance! I learnt that there are actually many things that the wrestlers have to learn before they fight and that they are super-flexible!”

Lasha
“I didn’t know that this type of wrestling dates back 1500 years and you can only watch it in Japan or on TV!”

Lincoln
“This was a great experience! I loved the ambience inside the Royal Albert Hall! I enjoyed this trip a lot! I also enjoyed the actual knowledge I gained about the Sumo and the Japanese culture; I learnt all about the traditions they have before they fight!”

Isaias
“I enjoyed the experience so much! I specifically enjoyed when the musician played a traditional instrument before the wrestling starts! I learnt that Sumo is based on a religion and the wrestlers follow some rituals to attract the sacred spirits before the fighting!”

Marbelys
“I really appreciated the opportunity to watch something that you cannot watch, unless you visit Japan! A massive thank you to our teacher for offering us a once-in-a-lifetime experience!”

The visit offered a unique cultural learning experience for our students, deepening their appreciation for Japanese heritage and giving them a rare chance to witness a centuries-old tradition brought to life on one of London’s most iconic stages.
