A fantastic voyage on Prolific with the Ocean Youth Trust

3rd May 2024

In April, 13 girls, led by Samiya, enjoyed a 5-day voyage on the training vessel Prolific with the Ocean Youth Trust (OYT), sailing 148 nautical miles.

Starting on Tuesday, 23 April, they sailed from Southampton to Cowes, on to Weymouth and back to Cowes before anchoring near Ryde before a night sail back to Southampton.

On the way to Weymouth they had a man overboard recovery drill under sail. On Friday, they worked hard on their RYA qualifications with sessions on rowing, knots and points of sail. On the night sail back to Southampton they took charge of the pilotage and running the vessel.

The girls particularly loved the night sailing and want to thank the crew for their patience and the unforgettable memories. Many thanks to skippers Constantinos and Vincent, to Staff First Mate Lauren, and to volunteers Glyn, Katie, Willoughby and Sandy.

Ten girls earned RYA Start Yachting certificates and three (Esther, Samiya, Baileigh) completed the syllabus for the more advanced Competent Crew. Elma, Victoria,

Jowiria, Esther and Samiya have been asked to consider training to become volunteers for OYT South in recognition of the skills and maturity they displayed.

Well done to all named above and to Siloé, Klaudia, Power, Ashley, Johana, Ozlem and Asli.

‘Thank you for selecting a great group of students who threw themselves into the voyage, made the most of the experience and were a lot of fun to have on board.’ Caroline White, Chief Operating Officer, OYT South

The Ocean Youth Trusr has some spaces on individual voyages in the summer holidays, including a race from Guernsey to Poole and they are happy to see any of our enthusiastic students on board!

If you are interested but can't afford the full cost of the voyage, you can apply for a bursary. Please contact Caroline White, Chief Operating Officer by email:
