Mobile phones - important announcement

RE: Mobile Phone Policy

As you will have seen in the media, there are rising concerns about the time teenagers are spending on their mobile phones. Sadly, we have not been immune to this and have seen a great increase in the use of phones in school. It has reached a point where it has become a genuine distraction and irritation and all too often, a disciplinary issue.

As a result, we are taking what might be seen as some firm action. The reality is that once the policy has been explained to students, the majority will comply. Essentially, we do not wish to see mobile phones in school between the hours of 8am and 4.20pm (after period 6 on a Monday), and 8am – 3.20pm after school between Tuesdays and Fridays.

We are fully aware and accepting that students will carry their phones on them but we will be insisting that they are out of sight and switched off during the day. If a phone is seen, it will be confiscated and a sanction applied. Sanctions will escalate each time a student is caught using their phone as outlined below:

Number of times phone is confiscated  Sanction
1 Collection at 3.30pm the same day
2 Collection at 3.30pm the next day with a note from parent
3 Collection after 1 week with parental meeting
Repeat offenders - collection after 1 week with parental meeting each time phone is confiscated The escalated sanctions will be reset each half term.

Students will be informed about the new policy on Wednesday afternoon July 3 during assembly and will be informed that the new policy begins on Thursday morning when they return to school. We do appreciate that for some individuals this may be a genuine issue. If you do have any concerns then please contact the school. Otherwise, I look forward to the usual high level of support from our parents on this matter.

Yours sincerely

Mr P.V. Sutton OBE

Principal
