If you would like to nominate your child to be considered for the school's gifted and talented register, please download the nomination form on the right of this page and complete it. Then either email to tbaxter@greigcityacademy.co.uk or ask your son or daughter to take it to Mr Baxter.  Mr Baxter is happy to answer any queries you  may have about our gifted and talented programme. You can contact him via the email above or by asking our reception staff (020 8609 0100) to pass on a request for him to call you.

Definition

Gifted and talented young people are those who have one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop these abilities). In the Academy the term 'gifted' refers to those pupils who are capable of excelling in academic subjects such as English or history. 'Talented' refers to those pupils who may excel in areas requiring visual-spatial skills or practical abilities, such as in music, art PE or drama.                                  
Gifted and talented students may demonstrate high achievement in only one subject or high ability across all subjects. There may be students who are high achievers but lack social skills or have a short concentration span. There may be those who have the potential but not the motivation to achieve at a high level. Others may have very good oral skills but poor writing skills. And yet others may find ways to disguise their abilities. Teacher are aware of these possibilities and use appropriate methods to identify gifted and talented students.

Identifying gifted and talented students

Students are identified through the collection and examination of both quantitative data such as National Curriculum assessments, internal and external examination results and qualitative data derived from nominations and referrals made by teachers.

Strategies to support gifted and talented students

 

  • All departmental schemes of work include details of extension and enrichment activities for the most able students.
  • Staff aim to create an atmosphere where it’s acceptable to be a high achiever.
  • The school encourages all students to become independent learners.  
  • Staff are aware of the effects of ethnicity, gender, social circumstance and bilingualism on learning and high achievement.
  • Strategies to support the development of students’ critical and analytical thinking skills are built into departmental action plans.
  • Special activities are regularly delivered where the normal timetable is suspended and cross-curricular projects are pursued to offer students more choice and responsibility.
  • Occasionally allowing students to work with a different year group.
  • Withdrawal across year groups.
  • Mentoring and other targeted support for high achievers.
  • Recognising and highlighting achievement.
  • Encouraging students to use their talents across subjects to become more rounded learners.
  • Encouraging students to engage in community-based, as well as inter-school and cross-borough level activities.

In the classroom

All staff recognise:

  • They need to adjust their teaching strategies and techniques when addressing the needs of high achievers.
  • The demotivating effect that unnecessary repetition of work can have on learning.
  • The danger in making the assumption that gifted and talented pupils are easier to teach than other students.
  • The value of varied and flexible student groupings, enabling able students to work together or take on particular roles in mixed ability groups.
  • They must set differentiated homework and encourage the completion of extension worksheets/tasks in lessons.
  • They should differentiate by outcome and set individual targets for each student.
  • The value of setting research tasks to enable students to become more independent in their learning.

Out of the classroom

The school will extend and enrich gifted and talented students through:

  • A wide range of out-of-hours learning activities and clubs.
  • A choice of local and residential trips and visits.
  • The services of outside agencies for training and provision.
  • Work experience in a challenging and stimulating placement.
  • University Trips including Oxbridge Colleges.
  • Summer schools with London universities and Highgate School.

Every subject teacher has a role in ensuring that high achievers receive a stimulating, challenging and enriching education.

The Academy is a member of NACE - the national organisation for able children in education - and staff use its resources in designing activities for the more able.
