Introduction

Students will achieve high academic standards at the Academy through the broad, balanced and challenging learning experiences we offer and they will always be encouraged to enjoy learning for its own sake.

In most subjects, students learn in mixed ability tutor groups (KS3) and teaching groups (KS4 and 5). In maths, students are placed in ability sets at the beginning of Year 7 in order to target work more precisely. Students are placed in ability sets in English in Year 8 and in science in Year 9. Progress is monitored regularly and students move between sets where appropriate. At KS4, students are placed in ability sets in all three subjects.

Please note that:

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of Sex and Relationships Education except for the parts included in the statutory National Curriculum. Any student who is withdrawn will be provided with alternative work.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from RE lessons. Parents wishing to withdraw will be made aware of the RE syllabus and advised that it is relevant to all students.

Parents wishing to withdraw their children from either of the above subjects should send a written request to the Principal.

At KS3

The usual teaching group is the tutor group - that is a maximum of 25 students. In some subjects, for example design and technology, teaching groups are 20 max.

At KS4

Groups in English, maths and science average about 24-25. Most other subjects are options, and group sizes vary depending on demand in any one year. A viable group comprises a minimum of 7-10 students and the average class size is 22.

At KS5

Group sizes vary depending on demand in any one year. A viable group comprises a minimum of 5 students and the average class size is 10.
