Bee-friendly

8th Feb 2022

On Tuesday 1st February, the GCA Beehive Club played host to approximately 60 Year 5 pupils from Lancasterian Primary School in Tottenham, who are studying bees as part of their STEM week.

GCA Students acted as ambassadors, escorting the younger pupils around a three-part rotation of bee-related activities:

  1. Pupil led assembly about the project, what we have done, why we have done it, all the different stages etc.

  1. Tech workshop to investigate the tools, see how the hives have been built by Mr. Hilmi and GCA students, how they fit together, a play around with the extractor, and Ms. Karsan explaining how we manage to extract the honey!

  1. Hive visits, getting the suits on, lighting the smoker and seeing the hives in full flow. Mr. Porter give them a passionate talk.

The primary school pupils were full of life and enthusiasm for our bees and have apparently returned inspired to Lancasterian to investigate the possibility of setting up their own beehive project.

Many thanks to Mr. Hilmi, Ms. Karsan and Mr. Porter for their expertise and to the following GCA students who were fine ambassadors throughout.
