Students from across the school represented Greig City Academy at the first Haringey Earth Summit conference, held at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre on 18th November. They prepared and took part in presentations showcasing the impact of Climate Change in both a Developed (Germany) and a Developing (Philippines) country.
It was an exciting opportunity for them to play a part in the decisions and changes that will be taking place locally, nationally and internationally. Each secondary school in Haringey sent 10-15 students to represent their school.
The fully packed day included international and national speakers from the Government Department of Energy & Climate Change, The Royal Geographic Society, Oxfam & Haringey Council; films, school presentations and an afternoon of workshops facilitated by the specialists.
Many workshop leaders gave positive feedback on our students' contributions, enthusiasm and behaviour so well done to:
7CO: Rebecca & Beatrice
8SK: Dawit and Jennifer O
9RG: Muhbul & Celine
10KO: Tobi, Janice, Shpetim & Anesu.
At the end of the day all the students from across Haringey voted for ideas and points for the Haringey Declaration. This will be taken to COP15, the international climate conference in Copenhagen this December.
Jennifer (8SK): "It was excellent, I learned a lot about climate change and I feel more involved making changes.”
Muhbul (9RG): "I think our work (at the conference) can help stop pollution and save energy."
Beatrice (7CO): “I learned more about global warming, and now I'll be making more effort with recycling and saving electricity."
