Sustainable Schools - let's aim to be an Eco-School

The Government wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020.  This means reducing the amount of energy and meterials we consume so that we don't use up the planet's natural resources.

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their journey to sustainability.  Schools work towards gaining one of three awards – Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag award, which recognises excellence in the field of environmental activity.  Bronze and Silver are both self accredited and Green Flag is externally assessed by Keep Britain Tidy.  GCA has achieved the Bronze Award and is now aiming for Silver.

Here are some of the things we've done so far:

Year 9 students conducted a waste audit to make us ashamed of all that we throw away which could be re-used or recycled

We've installed recycling bins throughout the school.  Now we have to put into practice our ideas for reducing consumption, and, where we can't reduce, making sure we re-use or recycle.

All food waste from GCA's kitchens is collected weekly by Haringey Council's environmental services team and used to make compost to nourish the borough's green spaces.  However, we're really hoping there won't be too much waste in the first place.

We've won over £8800 from the Local Food Lottery programme to grow fruit and vegetables in the school grounds and will be planting soon after Christmas.

Are you keen to get involved and help us make GCA the first Haringey secondary school to be a Green Flag school?  Don't waste any more time - talk to Ms Onanda now and discuss what you can do!
