Extra curricular - a rounded education

“The best thing about GCA is that you always have something to do”

That’s what one of last year’s Year 7 pupils told us and it’s also what parents say is good about the Academy.  For budding performers there are plenty of opportunities to play in school bands and ensembles and to set up their own groups.  The Gospel Choir has sung in some prestigious venues where GCA students have been chosen to sing solo.  Annual concerts, musical and drama productions give students a chance to show their talents.

Sports are a strength, particularly basketball, and our Under 15 girls and Under 14 boys teams are both national champions.  Our football teams are also starting to show their strength in local leagues.   Practice sessions are run before and after school as well as lunch time.

Our outdoor education programme has expanded rapidly over the last year with cycling, surfing and survival trips in the UK, Ireland and Holland.  Trips further afield are planned for 2007.  All Year 7 pupils go on a 3-day residential activity camp in October where they try out archery, abseiling, caving, assault courses, mountain biking and orienteering as well as having a great time at the barbecue and chatting to friends all night.

We have just introduced the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and many students enjoy the challenge of outdoor pursuits combined with community service.
