We were lucky enough to be awarded over £8000 in 2009 to create an allotment in the school grounds to grow fruit and vegetables. The award came from the Big Lottery Local food programme.
We built 18 raised vegetables beds where we've grown corn, courgettes, carrots, spinach, onions, beans, pumpkins, potatoes, tomatoes, basil and parsnips. You can see our first courgette crop below.
We've planted raspberries and blackberries to add to the bushes in the wildlife garden. We've also planted three apple trees, a pear tree and a plum tree as well as two grape vines.
Year 7 and 11 students have helped out along with a number of local adult volunteers and we've also had sterling support from pupils of St. Mary's Juniors and Rokesly Juniors - especially Robert Reilly who came in during a holiday to help out.
In September 2011, we sold some of our produce to raise funds to make the allotments sustainable. We had a stall at the Hornsey Garden Shop on the High Street and sold out within two hours. We've since received £400 from Capital Growth to develop the enterprise and will spend this on workshops with a gardener who'll show us how to grow for profit which we can plough back into the enterprise and also on workshops with a designer who'll work with students on packaging and marketing.
Thanks to our expert gardeners, James Hull and Daniel Lloyd-Morgan, and to Premises staff and Michael Goulding who have helped us recycle lots of materials already in school to create beds and fences.
