European Safer Schools Partnership and Comenius

February 2009

On Monday February 23 we weclomed our partners in the Comenius project and we'll be posting photographs here as we see more of them this week.

GCA is a member of the European Safer Schools Partnership which aims to put into practice in schools the European Charter for Democratic Schools without Violence.  This charter has seven points to which participating schools sign up.  You can see the full charter on the website on the Information page.  To sum up the points, the charter is about ensuring all members of the school community enjoy a safe and peaceful school, with everyone taking responsibility for contributing to a positive and inspiring environment for learning and personal development.  The partnership includes schools in Haringey – St. Paul’s and All Hallows, St. Ann’s, Campsbourne and Crowland - as well as schools in Finland, Turkey, Poland, Romania, Italy, France and Sweden.   Visits between the partners allow us all to share our experience and learn what works well in different countries and what we could try here in the UK.  Our partners in Poland, Finland and Turkey have joined us in a related project called Comenius which involves working together on ways of prevent incidents of violence in schools.  (The term ‘violence’ here means more than physical violence and includes bullying, racism, extortion and behaviours that cause harm to others.)  So far, Mr Bowmaker and Ms Thorp have taken part in training in France for the ESSP and in Finland for Comenius.  Later this year, both staff and students will take part in training in Poland and Turkey.  As the projects progress, we’ll let you know what has been learned and what we have introduced to help make the school an even safer environment for you.
