Would-be journalists got lots of advice from Emily Unia of BBC Radio News

13th May 2019

Quills United writing club members were given lots of advice from a professional radio journalist – Emily Unia of BBC Radio News.

Emily critiqued the news items they had prepared and helped them understand the difference between a news piece and an opinion piece. Her top tips included:

  • If you are quoting always say who your source is – unless it's an anonymous source of course.
  • Make sure you get your facts right.
  • Decide on the best way to communicate what you want to say – what is the priority?
  • Read one another's reports.
  • Make sure your spelling and grammar are accurate.
  • Short sentences are preferable.

Emily is going to keep in touch so we hope to see her again soon.
