Students and Mrs Arhagba shine at the Design Museum

14th Feb 2019

Congratulations to five GCA students on their resounding success in the Design Ventura National competition.

The competition is run by the Design Museum and Deutsche Bank, and it tasks teams to design environmentally-friendly products that can be sold in the museum shop.

Jason, Toni, Al, Arthur and Yanen designed an environmentally-friendly disposable fast food Bamspork - a combination spoon, knife and fork made of bamboo. Competition was fierce - they were up against other 1400 students so they were really pleased to be in the final shortlist of 10 teams.

On February 13th, the team had a stand where they were able to show their product to all the eminent visitors, including professional designers. Then there was a nerve-wracking wait until the team found they had gained an 'Outstanding Finalist Award'.

There was a surprise for Mrs Arhagba who received the 'Design Ventura Teacher of the Year Award' - one she didn't know existed. Here's what the judges said about her:

'Design Ventura wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and commitment of teachers. This year’s award goes to a teacher who has participated in Design Ventura every year since year one in 2009 and has supported hundreds of students through the project at her school. This teacher has also given her time to contribute to the formal evaluation of the project as a case study subject.'

Well done Al, Arthur, Toni, Yanen and Jason and well done Mrs Arhagba.
