Planet spotting

13th Dec 2021

On Friday December 10, we got the telescopes out to do a bit of planet spotting - the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus in a line.

We saw some of Jupiter's moons, Saturn's rings, a crescent-shaped Venus and the craters of the moon - pictured.

As Venus prepares to pass between the Earth and the sun it appears as a thinning crescent. And since at this point in its orbit it is nearly six times closer to us compared to when it was on the opposite side of the Sun, it appears much larger to us.
