Ubuntu - Faith in Focus Season

19th Jul 2021

Each year in RE we have a dedicated Faith in Focus Season where we immerse the school in spirituality and reflection based on an annual theme.  This gives us opportunities to refresh our connections with local faith communities and bring many visitors into our classrooms.

Our theme this year is Justice. Students have been exploring the classical Greek and religious definitions of the concept and exploring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.   Year 7  also explored the African concept of Ubuntu, which Desmond Tutu called ' God's dream'.  Ubuntu teaches that it is through community and relationship that we thrive and can reach our full potential. We are all connected and  develop a healthy respect for our fellow human beings once we realise that we cannot be truly human alone.

The RE department were delighted to welcome the Osagyefo Theatre company, led by Martin Hanson, back to GCA, with their vibrant workshop called  'Ubuntu, Jamming for Justice'  which was delivered to Year 7 through drumming ,storytelling and dance.

Well done to Year 7 for engaging so wholeheartedly in the event.

A new Amnesty International club will be set up for students from September and we are aiming to achieve the highly acclaimed and transformative  Amnesty Human Rights Friendly School status.
